When we recommend or compare AI tools and business software, we judge them by how useful they are to a trades or service business — not by how impressive they look in a product demo. This page explains what we look at and how we reach our conclusions.
What we evaluate
Depending on the type of tool, we consider:
- Trade relevance — does it fit how plumbing, electrical, HVAC, landscaping, cleaning or contracting businesses actually work?
- Core features — does it do the job it promises, such as answering calls, scheduling, quoting or invoicing?
- Ease of use — can a busy owner or office manager set it up and use it without a technical background?
- Pricing — is pricing clear, and does it suit a small business as well as a growing team?
- Integrations — does it connect with common tools such as calendars, accounting software and CRMs?
- Support and documentation — is help available when something goes wrong?
- Limitations — what it does not do well, and who it is not a good fit for.
- Data and privacy — what the provider says about how customer data is handled.
Hands-on use and research
Some reviews are based on our own use of a product. Others are based on research using official documentation, demonstrations, free trials, pricing pages and other public sources. We never claim to have tested a product we have not used, and where it matters we say which approach a review is based on.
How we make recommendations
A “best” list or recommendation reflects our judgement of which tools suit a particular type of business. We try to explain:
- who each tool is best for, and who should look elsewhere;
- the main trade-offs between options;
- alternatives, including free or lower-cost choices where they exist.

Software companies update their features and prices regularly. We aim to keep important reviews up to date, but you should always confirm current pricing and terms on the provider’s website before you buy.
